In a bid to regain its former glory, Congo Airlines has made a plea to the government for a substantial infusion of $33 million. The beleaguered national carrier was forced to ground its entire fleet after encountering a slew of mechanical and technical issues.

Congo Airlines Director General, José Dubier Lueya, candidly disclosed the staggering sum required to resurrect the airline. The airline’s woes began when all three of its aircraft were sidelined due to various problems.

Currently, one of the two Q400s in the airline’s possession is receiving much-needed maintenance in Malta. However, the Airbus A320, stranded in Kinshasa, faces an engine replacement estimated to cost a staggering $14 million. Another Q400 also languishes on the ground in Kinshasa due to technical issues.

In an effort to stay afloat during this turbulent period, Congo Airlines has floated the idea of leasing aircraft to maintain partial operations. This could potentially serve as a temporary solution to prevent a protracted period of inactivity, which could further jeopardize the company’s prospects.

However, the future of Congo Airlines remains shrouded in uncertainty. Last year, the government unveiled plans to establish a new airline in partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, casting doubt over the revival of the troubled national carrier.

As stakeholders anxiously await a decision, the fate of Congo Airlines hangs in the balance. Will the government come to the rescue with the necessary funds, or will the airline yield to the winds of change in the industry? Only time will tell whether Congo Airlines can rise from the ashes or if a new aviation era awaits the nation.
