Expelled from the Catholic Church due to alleged misconduct in 2018, Nwaigwe continued religious activities despite dismissal. The victim, whom hemet at a church program, alleges he lured her at 14, promising education support but instead sexually abused her. She claims he took her to Benin City, where she delivered a baby under suspicious circumstances—being told the baby died, but its whereabouts remain unknown.
During remand proceedings, the police prosecutor argued for Nwaigwe’s detention due to the serious nature of the offence against a minor supposedly under his spiritual guardianship. The defence sought bail citing legal provisions and vouched for Nwaigwe’s appearance in court. However, the court, considering the severity of the offence and the risk of flight, denied bail, directing the case file to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Anambra State and adjourning the case for further proceedings.
