Fernandes Hat-Trick Fires Man United to 5-2 Win Over Ipswich
Bruno Fernandes scored three times as Manchester United came from behind to defeat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Ipswich took a surprise lead in the 29th minute when Leif Davis found the net after United’s defence failed to deal with the visitors’ attack.
Fernandes levelled the score in the 40th minute with a powerful left-footed strike, giving United the momentum heading into the break.
United completed the turnaround 11 minutes after half-time when Jacob Greaves accidentally turned the ball into his own net.
Fernandes converted a penalty in the 61st minute before completing his hat-trick seven minutes later to put United firmly in control.
Bryan Mbeumo added United’s fifth goal in the 82nd minute as Michael Carrick’s side turned the game into a convincing victory.
Chuba Akpom scored a late consolation for Ipswich in stoppage time, but United comfortably held on for the three points.
The victory provided a strong response to United’s 2-0 defeat by Hull and offered Carrick encouragement after he had described that result as “just one game.”
Fernandes’ hat-trick also underlined the midfielder’s continued influence following an outstanding campaign last season.
Despite the emphatic scoreline, United’s defence remains a concern after Ipswich exposed gaps at the back and managed to score twice.
Carrick will be pleased with his team’s attacking response but will expect greater defensive discipline in their upcoming matches.
