Meet the Five Nigerian Cardinals in History

Nigeria has produced five cardinals in the history of the Catholic Church, beginning in 1976. These church leaders have played significant roles both within Nigeria and at the Vatican.

1. Dominic Cardinal Ekandem (1917–1995)

A native of Akwa Ibom State, Ekandem was ordained a priest in 1947 and became the first Bishop of Ikot Ekpene. In 1976, Pope Paul VI elevated him to the College of Cardinals, making him the first native West African cardinal.

2. Francis Cardinal Arinze (Born 1932)

From Anambra State, Arinze was ordained in 1958 and was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1985. He later served as Prefect of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, becoming one of Africa’s most influential Catholic leaders.

3. Anthony Cardinal Okogie (Born 1936)

Originally from Edo State with strong ties to Lagos, Okogie served as Archbishop of Lagos before Pope John Paul II created him a cardinal in October 2003.

4. John Cardinal Onaiyekan (Born 1944)

A native of Kabba, Kogi State, Onaiyekan was Archbishop of Abuja from 1994 to 2019. Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to the rank of cardinal in November 2012.

5. Peter Cardinal Okpaleke (Born 1963)

Born in Amesi, Anambra State, Okpaleke is the Bishop of Ekwulobia. Pope Francis announced his appointment as cardinal in May 2022, and he was formally created cardinal in August of the same year.

As of 2026, Cardinal Peter Okpaleke is Nigeria’s only cardinal under the age of 80 who is eligible to vote in a papal conclave. Cardinals Francis Arinze, Anthony Okogie, and John Onaiyekan have all passed the voting age limit.

Notably, Anambra State remains the only state in Nigeria to have produced two cardinals; Francis Arinze and Peter Okpaleke, highlighting its unique place in the country’s Catholic history.
