The Federal Government has activated the “No Work, No Pay” policy in response to the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) initiating a seven-day warning strike.

Despite ongoing negotiations and what the Ministry of Health described as significant progress in addressing the doctors’ concerns, NARD proceeded with the strike, raising fears of nationwide healthcare disruptions. The Ministry expressed deep regret over the timing of the strike, emphasizing that dialogue remains the best approach to resolve the issues.

The government also highlighted that several concerns related to the welfare and working conditions of resident doctors have already been addressed, but NARD’s decision to strike was seen as premature and potentially harmful to the healthcare system. The policy, according to the Ministry, is a legal measure to prevent disruptions to essential healthcare services. Meanwhile, the strike was partly triggered by the ongoing captivity of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a resident doctor.
