Sake, Democratic Republic of Congo — In a decisive operation, the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIRDC) conducted a targeted bombing attack on the hills of Sake, North Kivu province, resulting in the elimination of at least 65 rebels from the M23 and RDF militia groups. An additional 75 militants were injured during the intense aerial assault, which took place from May 30 to 31.

Among the casualties was a lieutenant-colonel from the RDF special forces, according to a report released by the SAMIRDC’s communications department. The operation was a response to escalating violence in the region, including clashes with M23 terrorists that left one South African soldier dead and 13 others injured last week.

The SAMIRDC, a multinational force led by South Africa and composed of troops from the Republics of Malawi and Tanzania, has been stationed in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2023. Its primary mission is to provide military support to the Congolese army, which has faced repeated challenges from the M23 rebels.

This latest offensive underlines the SAMIRDC’s commitment to restoring stability and peace in the conflict-ridden eastern DRC. As the situation remains tense, international attention remains focused on the ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the region’s complex security landscape.
