Thailand made history today, January 23, 2025, as its same-sex marriage law came into effect, allowing hundreds of LGBTQ+ couples to tie the knot.
For Apiwat “Porsch” Apiwatsayree and Sappanyoo “Arm” Panatkool, actors and one of the first couples to get married, this moment was decades in the making.
“We fought for it for decades, and today is a remarkable day that love is love,” they exclaimed, clutching their marriage certificates ¹.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra joined in the celebration, posting on social media, “Today, the rainbow flag is proudly flying over Thailand.”
The new law grants marriage, adoption, and inheritance rights to all couples, including transgender individuals, marking a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ rights in the region.
For Sumalee Sudsaynet, who married her partner today, this law is a game-changer. “The legalization of same-sex marriage uplifts our dignity,” she said, highlighting the importance of recognition and acceptance.
