NLC Sounds Alarm Over Workers’ Struggles as Wage Battle Approaches

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned that the current ₦70,000 minimum wage can no longer provide a decent standard of living for Nigerian workers, describing it as a wage that has been eroded by rising inflation and increasing economic pressure.

The union said it is preparing for a major engagement over the future of workers’ pay, insisting that the next minimum wage discussion must focus on achieving a living wage that reflects the realities faced by families across the country.

NLC President Joe Ajaero stated this during the inauguration of the Workers’ Solidarity Centre in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where labour leaders, government representatives and civil society groups gathered to discuss issues affecting the working class.

Ajaero said organised labour would not enter future wage negotiations from a position of weakness, stressing that workers deserve compensation that allows them to afford basic necessities and live with dignity.

He urged affiliated unions and state councils to remain united, saying the struggle ahead requires collective action rather than individual efforts.

According to him, the challenge before labour is beyond securing another adjustment in wages; it is about creating a system where workers can provide for their families without being trapped by economic hardship.

The NLC president also raised concerns over Nigeria’s continued criticism on workers’ rights, pointing to issues surrounding union activities, collective bargaining and the right to strike.

He appealed to the Federal Government to forward the reviewed labour bills to the National Assembly, arguing that the delay in passing the proposed legislation has created gaps that expose workers to unfair treatment.

Ajaero further linked the country’s economic difficulties to poor management of resources, arguing that Nigeria’s problem is not a lack of wealth but how available resources are distributed and utilised.

He said better management of public funds could improve essential sectors such as healthcare, transportation and infrastructure.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the NLC president called on organised labour to develop a stronger political strategy focused on workers’ welfare and long-term national development.

Former NLC President Ayuba Wabba, who also spoke at the event, encouraged continued political education among workers and urged labour organisations to learn from previous experiences in political engagement.
