Zimbabwe is facing a public health crisis as condom prices rise sharply, following the halt of HIV/AIDS funding by U.S. President Donald Trump. “The prices of condoms have reportedly soared in Zimbabwe after the President of US, Donald Trump halted the HIV funding to developing countries.”
A recent survey revealed that “the cheapest option now costs $1.50 per packet, while others are priced between $3.20 and $3.30.”
This price surge is primarily due to the suspension of USAID funding, which “previously supplied 98% of Zimbabwe’s condoms, both for sale and free distribution.”
Local brands, such as PSH’s Protector Plus, have also been impacted. The rising prices “pose serious public health risks, particularly in Zimbabwe’s fight against HIV/AIDS,” as access to affordable preventive measures becomes more limited.
