U.S. based doctor calls on govt. to streamline emergency care in Nigeria’s hospitals

A U.S.-based Nigerian doctor has urged governments at all levels to urgently streamline emergency care in the country’s hospitals so patients no longer face life-threatening delays.

Imasogie made the appeal during a medical outreach held on Saturday.

The outreach was organised by Erina Help and Care Foundation in collaboration with the Love of God in Christ (LOGIC) church and Diamed Centre.

The doctor highlighted how bureaucratic procedures, lack of equipment, and insufficient staffing at triage points force patients to wait for paperwork, referrals, and payments before receiving critical treatment.

“One of the things I appeal to the government is to ensure emergency care is made easy for patients to see medical care.

“I say this coming from someone who is from America and the way our system is run there.

“One of the things we offer to people, whether they are citizens or not, you can walk into any emergency room and get treated.

“You can never be turned away and abandoned. I do not care if you do not have documents or what your status is, you will never be turned away.

“I know that Nigeria is evolving. I pray we get to that point where we will never shut our doors.

“I pray the government will see the need to ensure good health for the people, what that does in turn for the economy and longevity of the nation.

“If you have a nation where people are sick, it will not strive, but when people are well, the opportunities are endless, “ she said.

Imasogie called for policies that prioritised immediate stabilisation, standardised emergency protocols across all facilities.

She also called on the governments to ensure guaranteed funding for essential drugs, diagnostics, and personnel in emergency units.

She emphasised that making emergency response seamless was not just about efficiency, but about saving lives, reducing preventable deaths, and restoring public trust in the healthcare system.

The outreach offered free consultations; malaria screening; blood pressures check; blood sugar levels; eye check; cervical and breast screenings for women, and dental care
