Uganda Declares Victory After Latest Ebola Outbreak Tests Health System

Uganda has officially ended its latest Ebola outbreak after health authorities confirmed that the country passed the required monitoring period without detecting any new infections.

Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi announced the development on Tuesday, bringing an end to an outbreak that recorded 20 confirmed cases and two deaths.

The outbreak, which began in May, involved infections linked to the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, where Ebola remains a major public health concern.

Fifteen of the cases recorded in Uganda were among people connected to the neighbouring country.

Officials said 18 patients recovered and were discharged, while the two deaths recorded during the outbreak involved Congolese nationals.

Baryomunsi said the declaration followed the successful completion of the mandatory 42-day surveillance period recommended after the last locally transmitted case was discharged.

“Throughout this period the ministry of health maintained intensive surveillance nationwide and no new Ebola cases have been detected,” he said.

The last Ebola patient in Uganda, a Congolese national, was discharged on June 22, while the final locally transmitted case had been released from care on June 16.

Uganda has experienced several Ebola outbreaks since its first recorded epidemic in 2000. Health authorities say lessons from previous outbreaks have strengthened the country’s response systems, allowing faster detection, contact tracing and containment.

However, health experts continue to warn that the country remains at risk because of its tropical forest environment, which provides a habitat for fruit bats believed to be natural hosts of the virus.

Ebola spreads through contact with infected body fluids and tissues. Common symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting and bleeding.

The latest declaration provides relief for communities and health workers who spent weeks monitoring possible cases and working to prevent further transmission.
