Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned to court on Monday to testify in his ongoing corruption trial.
He is accused of accepting tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of cigars and champagne from a Hollywood billionaire in exchange for political favors, as well as promoting regulations that benefited media moguls in return for favorable coverage.
Netanyahu, who denies all charges, has described the case as a “witch hunt” orchestrated by the media and a biased legal system.
As he entered the courtroom in Tel Aviv, a woman in the audience questioned, “Don’t you think it is time to get all the hostages out?”
This remark came after the frail appearance of three Israeli hostages recently released. Netanyahu’s trial marks a significant point in his political career, as he is the first sitting Israeli leader to face criminal charges.
Despite the controversy surrounding him, he continues to maintain that the charges are politically motivated.
