Prince William and Princess Catherine Welcome Tinubu During Landmark UK State Visit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu have commenced a historic state visit to the United Kingdom, marking the first of its kind by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades.

The presidential couple received a formal welcome from senior members of the British royal family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The reception took place at the Fairmont Windsor Park hotel, where the royal hosts greeted the Nigerian delegation ahead of the official ceremonies.

Upon arrival at London Stansted Airport earlier in the week, Tinubu and his wife were ushered into a series of ceremonial activities, beginning with a grand استقبال at Windsor Castle.

The programme featured a traditional carriage procession and a military parade, underscoring the significance of the visit.

Later in the day, both the British monarch and President Tinubu are expected to deliver speeches at a state banquet attended by political figures and prominent personalities connected to Nigeria.

The event will also include a symbolic exchange of gifts and an exhibition of Nigerian artefacts from the Royal Collection.

According to Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, the visit is aimed at strengthening longstanding ties between both nations by advancing cooperation in key sectors such as trade, finance and defence.

He described the engagement as an effort to convert historic goodwill into meaningful economic collaboration.

Although Tinubu has travelled to the UK several times since assuming office, this visit represents his first official state engagement.

It also ends a 37-year gap since a Nigerian leader last received full state honours in Britain, with the previous visit taking place in 1989.

Members of the Nigerian delegation include notable figures from the arts, sports and entertainment industries, reflecting the country’s cultural influence.

Special arrangements were also made for Muslim guests observing Ramadan, including designated spaces for prayer and provisions for breaking their fast before the banquet.

Streets in Windsor were decorated with Nigerian and British flags, while the ceremonial procession moved through the town to the castle.

The event blended royal tradition with diplomatic symbolism, highlighting renewed efforts to deepen bilateral relations between both countries.
