South Africa Loses World Cup Midfielder Jayden Adams at 25
South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of World Cup midfielder Jayden Adams, who passed away at the age of 25.
The BBC reported that police are investigating after the body of a 25-year-old man was found at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Officials have not released the cause of death.
Reacting to the news, South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, hailed Adams as one of the country’s most gifted young footballers, saying his death is a heartbreaking loss for the nation.
“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international,” McKenzie said.
He appealed to the public and media to allow investigators to do their work and urged everyone to respect the privacy of Adams’ loved ones and his club, Mamelodi Sundowns.
“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed. I urge everyone to show compassion, avoid speculation and allow the appropriate authorities to communicate official information when the time is right,” he added.
Adams was one of South Africa’s standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring in every group-stage match as Bafana Bafana advanced beyond the first round for the first time before suffering elimination at the hands of co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32.
His courage also drew admiration during the tournament when he played against the Czech Republic only hours after receiving news of his grandmother’s death.
The South African Football Players Union described his passing as a devastating blow to the country’s football family.
After making his senior debut for South Africa in 2022, Adams established himself as a key member of the national team and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
He began his professional journey with Stellenbosch FC before completing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. During his time with the club, he celebrated both the South African Premiership title and the CAF Champions League.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death, tributes have continued to pour in for a player widely regarded as one of the brightest faces of South African football.
