Silence, Then Shock: Nollywood Star Alex Ekubo Reportedly Dies at 39

Famed Alex Ekubo, one of Nigeria’s most recognizable screen talents, has reportedly passed away after a prolonged battle with kidney cancer.

According to sources within the Nollywood ecosystem, the actor was rushed to a hospital on Monday following a critical deterioration in his health. After several hours on life support, he was pronounced dead on Tuesday afternoon.

Industry insiders disclosed that Ekubo had been privately managing kidney cancer, a condition that had significantly affected his public engagements in recent months.

Concerns about his wellbeing first gained traction in May 2025 when his extended absence from social media sparked widespread speculation. A review of his digital footprint shows that his last public post was made on December 30, 2024.

Renowned for his charisma, screen presence, and versatility, Alex Ekubo built a distinguished career in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, earning admiration from colleagues and audiences across Africa and beyond.

His passing marks the loss of a cultural icon whose contributions helped shape the modern trajectory of Nollywood and amplified the global visibility of African storytelling.

Further details regarding official statements from his family and funeral arrangements are expected in due course.
