Imo Set for First Robotic Surgery as Specialist Hospital Breaks New Ground
Imo State is set to make a major breakthrough in healthcare today as the state prepares to perform its first-ever robotic-assisted surgery.

The landmark procedure is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the Imo Robotics and Oncology Centre (IROC), located at the Imo Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, in Owerri West Local Government Area.
The development is part of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration’s efforts to provide advanced medical services within the state and reduce the need for residents to travel abroad for specialised treatment.
The surgery will be led by Prof. Kingsley Ekwueme, a Consultant Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgeon and Lead Urological Surgeon at Glan Clwyd Hospital in the United Kingdom.
Prof. Ekwueme, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and founder of The Prostate Clinic, is internationally recognised for his expertise in robotic and minimally invasive surgery.
Governor Uzodimma is expected to witness the procedure, highlighting the administration’s push to transform healthcare through investment in modern infrastructure, technology and specialised medical services.
The IROC was conceived as part of the governor’s plan to position Imo as a centre for advanced healthcare in Nigeria and attract patients from other parts of the country and Africa.

The commencement of robotic surgery marks a significant moment in Imo’s healthcare history and introduces a new level of surgical technology to the state.
