Woman Dies After Attack at Church in Imo, Suspect Flees With Two Children

A woman has died following an attack at a church in Owelu, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State, with police launching a manhunt for the suspect, who allegedly fled with two of the couple’s children.

The incident occurred on Sunday during a church service. According to reports, the suspect, believed to be the deceased’s husband, arrived at the church and allegedly attacked her before escaping from the scene with two of their three children. Their third child, an infant said to be only a few months old, was left behind.

The circumstances surrounding the attack and the motive behind it have yet to be established.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, SP Henry Okoye, said officers from the Owerri North Divisional Police Headquarters responded to the scene after receiving a distress report.

He said the command has commenced an investigation, while efforts have been intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspect and safely rescue the two missing children.

Okoye appealed to anyone with credible information that could assist the investigation or lead to the suspect’s arrest to report to the Owerri North Divisional Police Headquarters or contact the command through its emergency lines.

The incident has thrown the Owelu community into mourning as residents await further developments from the ongoing police investigation.
