Iran Bombards U.S. Military Targets as Gulf Conflict Escalates
The conflict between Iran and the United States has intensified after Tehran launched missile and drone attacks on several American military facilities across the Gulf in retaliation for recent U.S. strikes on Iranian territory.
Iran’s military said the operation targeted U.S. military assets in Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, including a Patriot missile defence system, an early-warning installation and a fuel storage facility used by American forces.
Authorities in Kuwait reported intercepting several incoming missiles and drones, adding that one person sustained injuries from falling shrapnel.
Jordan also activated its air defence systems after missiles were detected passing through its airspace, with officials saying the projectiles were successfully intercepted.
The attacks have further undermined efforts to preserve a ceasefire that had temporarily reduced hostilities. U.S. President Donald Trump has since indicated that the truce has effectively collapsed.
The escalation came as Iran held the burial of its slain Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in the holy city of Mashhad.
Thousands attended the funeral, with mourners expressing anger over the U.S. airstrike that killed him earlier this year.
Iranian authorities also reported fresh explosions in several southern cities, including Bushehr and Bandar Abbas, following the latest exchange of attacks.
Bushehr is home to Iran’s only nuclear power plant, and officials said part of the facility’s perimeter was struck.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that any additional U.S. military action in the region would be met with a stronger response, while accusing Washington of interfering with shipping activities in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Although fears of disruptions to global oil supplies initially pushed energy prices higher, markets later stabilized as investors assessed whether the latest military exchanges would lead to a prolonged regional conflict.
