Four WAFCON Semi-Finalists Punch Tickets to 2027 Women’s World Cup
The race for Africa’s places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup has taken shape, with Malawi, Morocco, Algeria and Cameroon securing automatic qualification.
The four nations earned their World Cup places by reaching the semi-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which is doubling as Africa’s qualifying tournament for next year’s global competition in Brazil.
Morocco reached the last four after defeating defending champions South Africa 2-1, while Algeria booked its place with a similar 2-1 win over Ivory Coast.
Cameroon claimed a narrow 1-0 victory against Nigeria to eliminate the Super Falcons, while Malawi shocked Ghana with a 2-1 triumph.
The semi-final matches will take place on Wednesday. Morocco will meet Cameroon in the first encounter, while Algeria will face Malawi in the second.
For the four teams that exited in the quarter-finals, the journey is not yet over.
Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Africa will battle among themselves for an opportunity to reach the intercontinental play-offs, where they can still fight for a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
