Infantino, Morocco’s 2030 World Cup Final: FIFA Breaks Silence
FIFA has responded to reports alleging that its president, Gianni Infantino, assured Morocco of hosting the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, dismissing the claims as inaccurate.
The football governing body said suggestions that Infantino had made such a commitment were “false and misleading,” adding that no decision has yet been reached on the venue for the tournament’s final match.
The reports had fuelled speculation that Morocco had already secured the right to host the showpiece event, with some linking the alleged promise to Infantino’s bid to strengthen support ahead of future FIFA elections.
In its response, FIFA insisted that the claims were unfounded.
“It is false and misleading to claim the FIFA President has made any promise in relation to hosting the FIFA World Cup 2030 Final,” the organisation said in a statement.
It added that the venue for the final will be determined at a later date through FIFA’s official decision-making process.
The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal in what will be a historic centenary edition of the tournament.
To commemorate 100 years since the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, the opening matches will also be staged in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
Although Morocco has been tipped as one of the possible hosts for the final, Spain is also pushing to stage football’s biggest match.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese Football Federation declined to comment on the latest speculation.
FIFA has maintained that no host city for the 2030 World Cup final has been selected and that an official announcement will be made when the appropriate process is concluded.
