President Tinubu led ECOWAS in activating a standby force to combat terrorism in the region, gradually easing sanctions on Niger Republic.
The leaders emphasized their commitment to peace, security, and democracy, setting up committees to engage with the Niger military junta for a transition roadmap. Immediate release of detained President Bazoum was urged, with sanctions to ease based on outcomes.
The Authority warned of maintaining sanctions, including force, if the junta fails to comply.The summit applauded efforts in consolidating democracy and peaceful resolutions in member states, emphasizing the need for financial and resource mobilization for a regional counterterrorism force. The commission was directed to facilitate the Special Envoy on Counterterrorism’s mission.
