Zambia’s Lungu Cries for State Crumbs

Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, once adamant about rejecting what he deemed as state “crumbs,” is now knocking on the doors of the Lusaka High Court, pleading for the reinstatement of benefits yanked away after his return to active politics.

In a bold legal challenge, Lungu contests the government’s withdrawal of retirement benefits, privileges, and even his office’s closure, branding the move an infringement on his fundamental rights.

The country’s Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha swiftly responded, citing legal provisions that bar benefits for former presidents engaged in active politics.

Lungu’s legal move comes merely two months after he defiantly declared his return to politics, vowing not to succumb to state offerings he referred to as “crumbs.”

The former president’s abrupt shift from rejecting state benefits to seeking their reinstatement has raised eyebrows and injected a fresh layer of complexity into Zambia’s political landscape.

As the legal tug-of-war unfolds, political analysts speculate on the potential ramifications for Lungu’s political aspirations and the broader implications on Zambia’s political decorum.

The courtroom showdown adds a dramatic chapter to Lungu’s political narrative, leaving many to question whether this legal gambit will bolster or hinder his ambitions.

Observers note that the government’s response, citing the Benefits of Former Presidents Act, appears to reinforce a stringent stance against extending benefits to those actively involved in politics with the Attorney General arguing that Lungu can’t have both – playing an active political role while enjoying state-sponsored benefits.

Lungu’s legal team, led by Likando Kalaluka, asserts that the state’s actions violate Lungu’s freedom of speech, movement, and assembly, setting the stage for a legal battle with implications beyond the courtroom.

The former president is demanding the full reinstatement of benefits, including a functional office, vehicles, and staff, in line with existing legislation.

The courtroom drama raises questions about the evolving nature of the relationship between political figures and state benefits in Zambia.

As the legal clash gains momentum, all eyes are on the Lusaka High Court, where Lungu seeks redress and, potentially, a political recalibration in the wake of his legal gambit.
