R. Kelly Takes Another Shot at Freedom
R&B singer R. Kelly has launched a fresh effort to secure an early release from prison after formally applying for a reduction of his 31-year sentence.

According to newly released records from the US Department of Justice, the singer has filed a request for executive clemency, asking that his prison term be commuted.
The application remains under review and does not seek to overturn his convictions.
Kelly, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was convicted in separate federal cases involving racketeering, sex trafficking, child exploitation and child abuse images.
In 2021, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison after being found guilty of leading a criminal enterprise that recruited women and underage girls for illegal sexual activity.

The following year, he received another 20-year sentence on child abuse image and child enticement charges. Since most of that sentence runs concurrently with the first, he is serving a total of 31 years behind bars.
The 59-year-old is currently incarcerated at a federal prison in North Carolina and is not expected to be released until January 2046.
His attorney, Beau Brindley, has been pressing for his release for more than a year. In 2025, Brindley filed an emergency motion seeking Kelly’s transfer to home detention, claiming the singer’s life was at risk while in federal custody.

The latest court filings show Kelly’s clemency request is still pending, with no indication yet on whether it will be approved.
