A US-based policy advisory firm says President Bola Tinubu could face criminal charges after leaving office over allegations linked to a longstanding heroin-trafficking case.
Von Batten-Montague-York made the claim Tuesday in a post on its verified X account while discussing FBI and DEA court filings.
The firm, however, said the documents it reviewed do not establish that the US government intends to prosecute Tinubu.
It said separate responses from the FBI and DEA raised questions about whether an investigation or enforcement proceeding connected to the case still exists.
According to the firm, both agencies were asked to confirm that no investigation or enforcement proceeding remained pending more than 30 years later.
It said the agencies declined, stating that they were not obligated to comment on whether a law-enforcement investigation or proceeding may exist.
The firm said its reading of some court filings suggested Tinubu could face prosecution after leaving office and losing presidential immunity.
It also cited references to wiretaps in FBI and DEA filings and noted that some individuals associated with the underlying investigation are dead.
The firm acknowledged that the agencies’ refusal to confirm an investigation does not prove that charges against Tinubu are forthcoming.
However, it said the responses raised questions about whether the matter could have legal implications for Tinubu after his presidency.
