BURKINA FASO: Russia Pulls 100 Paramilitary Officers from Burkina Faso Amid Ukraine Conflict

Russia is withdrawing 100 paramilitary officers from Burkina Faso, part of the Bear Brigade, to reinforce its defense against Ukraine’s offensive in the Kursk region. These officers, who arrived in May to support Burkina Faso’s military junta, are linked to Russia’s rebranded Wagner Group, now called the Africa Corps.

Their departure raises concerns about the potential empowerment of Islamist insurgents, who recently killed up to 300 people in one of Burkina Faso’s deadliest attacks. Communication Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo described the attack as “barbaric. “Despite efforts by interim President Capt Ibrahim Traoré to curb jihadist violence, nearly half the country remains outside government control.

The junta’s reliance on Russian military support has been significant, but with this partial withdrawal, it is unclear how Burkina Faso will fill the security gap. “When the enemy arrives on our Russian territory, all Russian soldiers forget about internal problems and unite against a common enemy,” said Bear Brigade commander Viktor Yermolaev regarding the unit’s return to Russian-occupied Crimea due to the current situation in Ukraine.
