The Federal Government has filed a lawsuit at the Supreme Court against the Governors of all 36 states, alleging misconduct in the administration of Local Government Areas (LGAs).
The suit, marked SC/CV/343/2024, seeks full autonomy for LGAs, prohibiting governors from dissolving elected local officials and ensuring direct funding from the Federation Account. Filed by Attorney General Prince Lateef Fagbemi, the FG’s case demands adherence to the constitutional requirement for democratically elected local governments and an end to the use of Caretaker Committees.
Among those named in the suit are Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Hope Uzodinma (Imo), and their counterparts from the remaining states. The Supreme Court will hear the case on May 30.
