Former Bosasa Boss Angelo Agrizzi Gets 40-Year Suspended Sentence for R1.8bn Corruption Case

Former Bosasa executive Angelo Agrizzi has been sentenced to 40 years in prison by the Pretoria High Court but the entire sentence was suspended for five years.

This means he won’t go to jail immediately, provided he cooperates with investigators. Agrizzi pleaded guilty to multiple counts of corruption and money laundering linked to Bosasa’s R1.8 billion government contracts between 2004 and 2007.

These contracts involved catering, CCTV installation, perimeter fencing, and television systems for the Department of Correctional Services.

The court’s decision follows a plea and sentence agreement between Agrizzi and the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac).

As part of the deal, Agrizzi must assist investigators by giving full details of corruption involving both government and Bosasa officials.

Idac spokesperson Henry Mamothame said that while the crimes were serious and tied to South Africa’s broader “state capture” scandal, securing Agrizzi’s cooperation was key to exposing others involved in the network.

Authorities believe Agrizzi’s evidence will help the National Prosecuting Authority pursue bigger names linked to the Bosasa corruption saga.

He is also required to testify in future court cases and provide affidavits revealing what he knows.

Meanwhile, the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit is working to recover proceeds from the corrupt deals.

The suspended sentence ensures Agrizzi avoids prison for now, but his cooperation will determine whether justice extends to others who benefited from the Bosasa scandal.
