Somalia Voices Disappointment After U.S. Denies Entry to Top CAF Referee Omar Artan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia has expressed regret over the decision by authorities in the United States to refuse entry to Somali international football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan.

Mr. Artan, who was named CAF Referee of the Year 2025, is regarded as one of Somalia’s most distinguished sports officials and a figure of national pride, with a growing reputation across African and global football circles.

The Ministry stated that the Somali government engaged in diplomatic communication with relevant authorities to support his travel arrangements. However, despite these efforts, approval for entry was not granted.

While acknowledging the outcome, the government reaffirmed its pride in Mr. Artan’s achievements, describing him as a symbol of resilience and excellence whose success continues to motivate Somali youth and the wider sporting community.

Mr. Artan has since returned safely to Somalia and is expected to continue his duties in both domestic and international football officiating.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to supporting Somali professionals representing the country on global platforms and promoting their participation in international engagements.
