2026 FIFA WORLD CUP: Pochettino’s USA Puts on a Clinic While Larin Keeps Canadian Dreams Alive

The grand curtain has finally been lifted on the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stages, delivering a breathtaking cocktail of contrasting fortunes for the North American co-hosts.

While fans across two nations packed stadiums in celebration, the opening matches proved that home advantage guarantees nothing in the beautiful game.

By the time the final whistles blew, one host nation found themselves breathing a heavy sigh of relief, while their neighbors to the south sent an emphatic, terrifying warning shot to the rest of the footballing world.

In Toronto, history was forged with an intense emotional rescue as Canada earned its first-ever World Cup point in a dramatic 1-1 draw against a stubborn Bosnia and Herzegovina side.

Playing their first men’s tournament match on home soil, the Canadians fell behind in the 21st minute after a towering header from Jovo Lukić gave the visitors a shock lead.

Les Rouges fought back valiantly, dominating possession and relentlessly knocking on the door until second-half substitute Cyle Larin sent the Toronto Stadium crowd into an absolute frenzy.

In the 78th minute, Larin swiveled inside the box to fire home a deflected equalizer, saving Canada from opening-day heartbreak and securing a historic result.

Meanwhile, a few thousand miles away at the Los Angeles Stadium, the United States Men’s National Team staged an absolute masterclass, thrashing Paraguay 4-1 in a sparkling Group D debut.

Mauricio Pochettino’s squad set the tone almost immediately when an early cross forced an own goal from Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla in the seventh minute.

From there, the Americans put on a terrifying offensive clinic, led by a clinical first-half brace from star striker Folarin Balogun, who pushed the lead to 3-0 before the interval.

Although Paraguay managed to pull one back through Maurício in the 73rd minute, substitute Gio Reyna capped off the night with a gorgeous stoppage-time strike to complete the rout.

As the opening round of fixtures settles, the tournament’s co-hosts find themselves on entirely different trajectories.

The United States sits proudly at the summit of Group D, possessing all the momentum and swagger of a team capable of a deep tournament run.

Canada, despite missing out on a maiden victory, will take immense confidence from their gritty comeback as they pivot to a crucial upcoming match.

With Mexico also opening their campaign with a win, the tournament’s staging ground has officially set a thrilling, unpredictable standard for the weeks ahead
