Malawi Picks Minister’s Daughter for Miss World After Dropping Crowned Queen

Malawi has chosen Ireen Navicha, the first runner-up in the Miss Malawi pageant, to represent the country at Miss World 2026, replacing the national winner, Thandi Chisi.

The decision has drawn attention because Navicha is the daughter of Malawi’s Cabinet Minister Mary Navicha.

Chisi was crowned Miss Malawi on December 13 in Lilongwe and had been expected to represent the country at the international pageant in Vietnam, scheduled for August 9 to September 5, 2026.

Her replacement has raised questions over the circumstances surrounding the decision and whether the winner was fairly treated.

The Miss Malawi Organisation initially explained that Chisi was dropped because of her age, claiming that she exceeded the Miss World eligibility limit.

That explanation was later questioned after it became apparent that Chisi would still be 27 when the international competition is held.

The organisation subsequently admitted there had been confusion over the age requirement. Its Chief Executive, Benedette Mweso, apologised for the mix-up and said the organisation accepted responsibility for the confusion.

Goshen City, the principal sponsor of the Miss Malawi pageant, later provided a different explanation for Navicha’s selection.

The sponsor said the decision reflected a new policy intended to ensure that opportunities linked to international competitions were available to more finalists, rather than being limited to the overall winner.

Miss Malawi board chairperson, Prophetess Mary Bushiri, was quoted by local media as saying that the winner, runners-up and other finalists could all receive international opportunities.

Despite the explanation, the replacement has continued to generate debate, particularly because of Navicha’s family connection to a serving government minister.

Miss World has since confirmed Navicha as Malawi’s representative for the 2026 competition.

Chisi has not publicly disclosed all the details surrounding her replacement but has indicated that she intends to speak about the matter.

In a message to her supporters, she said that a crown alone does not define a queen, placing emphasis instead on character.

In a statement issued on July 27, Chisi said she was confident that the relevant facts would eventually emerge and promised to address the controversy “openly and responsibly at the appropriate time.”

For now, the change has placed Malawi’s participation in Miss World 2026 under unusual scrutiny, with attention shifting from the country’s return to the global pageant to the controversy surrounding who will wear its crown on the international stage.
