The UN chief condemned the renewed clashes and urged all parties to immediately exercise restraint, warning that continued confrontation could further destabilise the country’s fragile political and security environment.

He called for disputes to be resolved through dialogue, stressing the need to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.

On the ground in Mogadishu, reports indicate that heavy exchanges of gunfire broke out between federal government forces and opposition-linked elements, with the fighting stretching for more than ten hours into the night.

Residents described an unusual and tense atmosphere as parts of the city were forced into silence under the weight of sustained gunfire and movement restrictions.

The United Nations reiterated its support for ongoing peace and reconciliation efforts in Somalia, urging all sides to step back from further escalation and return to negotiations.
