At least 40 people have gone missing following a Friday raid of a town by gunmen in Zamfara state.

Local media reported that villagers fled Rini town after armed gangs started the raid, and by Saturday daybreak, relatives of missing people had started looking for them.

Authorities say attacks broke out an hour after midnight adding that residents did not hesitate to run away for safety after several gunshots.

Zamfara state government, Ibrahim Dosara, said security services were working to restore order in the town in addition to launching a search for hostages and responsible gangs.
