In a recent development, Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, has taken strict action against 15 final-year law students for their involvement in various forms of examination malpractice.
Among those expelled were a Catholic priest from the Orlu Diocese and a lecturer from the university’s Department of Management Sciences. Reports suggest that the decision to expel these students, announced just before Christmas Day, was met with controversy. Allegations include students hiring substitutes to take exams for them and using mobile phones during examinations. The Catholic priest, citing security concerns in the Orlu area, reportedly hired someone to sit the exam on his behalf due to a previous incident where unknown gunmen shot at his vehicle, preventing his travel to the examination center.
Despite debates about the severity of the punishment, a university official leading the expulsion threatened legal action if the decision wasn’t upheld. While the university’s Public Relations Officer, Sir Ralph Njoku-Obi, claimed to have no information on the matter when contacted, the incident has sparked discussions about the prevalence of academic dishonesty among students in various departments.
