In a harrowing case that shook the community, the Chief Judge of Niger State, Halima Abdulmalik, delivered a chilling verdict, condemning Stephen Jiya to death by hanging for the brutal murder of his mother, Comfort Jiya.

The deceased, a retired director in the Niger State Ministry of Education, fell victim to her own son’s actions.Jiya faced charges of culpable homicide under Section 221 of the penal code law. His trial, which commenced on November 23, 2022, culminated in a solemn pronouncement on December 14, 2023, after a period of legal proceedings that unveiled a disturbing narrative.

The convict’s confession painted a grim picture, revealing that he had taken his mother’s life on suspicions arising from his wife’s inexplicable disappearance from their Suleja residence in January 2022. The prosecution presented a compelling case supported by irrefutable evidence and credible witnesses, sealing Jiya’s fate with the death penalty.

The court’s decision, while a testament to justice served, echoes the tragic consequences of familial discord and the irrevocable loss caused by an unfathomable act. The repercussions of this distressing event resonate throughout the community, sparking reflection on the fragility of human relationships and the devastating toll of domestic turmoil.
