  • Tragedy on the Niger River: At Least 26 Killed in Kogi State Boat Accident

At least 26 people have died after a boat carrying traders capsized on the Niger River in north-central Nigeria, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The deadly accident occurred on Tuesday in the Ibaji area of Kogi State, leaving families and communities in mourning.

According to Kingsley Fanwo, Kogi State Commissioner for Information, the victims were mostly local traders traveling to a market in neighboring Edo State. “This is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, as well as the entire Ibaji local government area, in this moment of grief,” Fanwo said in an official statement.

Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the accident. However, local reports suggest that the vessel may have been overloaded, a recurring issue on Nigeria’s inland waterways, particularly during the rainy season when water levels rise and river travel becomes riskier.

Fanwo said the state government would collaborate with federal agencies to strengthen waterway safety and prevent future tragedies. “We are committed to working with all relevant bodies to ensure safer transportation on our waterways,” he added.

Boat accidents are sadly common in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, especially in remote and rural areas where water transport is often the only means of travel. Many of these boats are poorly maintained and operate without essential safety measures such as life jackets, navigational aids, or proper regulatory oversight. Overcrowding is another major factor, with operators frequently carrying more passengers or goods than the vessels can safely handle.

Just last month, a similar tragedy claimed at least 31 lives when an overloaded boat struck a tree trunk in the Borgu area of Niger State. Analysts and safety advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of regulations governing inland water transportation, improved emergency response systems, and public awareness campaigns to reduce preventable deaths.

For communities along the Niger River, waterways serve as vital economic and social lifelines, linking traders, farmers, and families to markets and neighboring regions. Yet these same waters can turn deadly without proper safety standards.

Emergency teams and local divers were deployed to the accident scene in Kogi State to recover bodies and search for possible survivors. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the vessel overturned, throwing passengers into the water. Some were rescued by nearby fishermen, but many could not be saved in time.

As the nation grapples with another avoidable tragedy, safety experts stress the need for long-term investment in infrastructure, stricter regulation of water transport, and the provision of life-saving equipment. Without these measures, they warn, such disasters are likely to continue repeating.

  • The Kogi State government has extended condolences to the bereaved families and pledged support during this difficult period. Funeral arrangements and identification of the victims are underway as investigations continue into the root cause of the incident.
