9 African Nations Secure Spots for 2026 FIFA World Cup — The Journey So Far
The long road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has ended with nine African nations sealing their places in football’s biggest tournament, set to hold across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Spanning nearly two years, the African qualifiers saw 53 out of the 54 Confederation of African Football (CAF) member nations battle for glory. Divided into nine groups, teams played on a home-and-away basis from November 2023 to October 2025. The group winners automatically qualified, while the best four runners-up earned a chance in a playoff to secure one last continental ticket.
With the World Cup expanding to 48 teams, Africa’s representation rose from five to nine confirmed spots, with a possible tenth through the intercontinental playoff in March 2026.
The Road to North America: How Each Group Played Out
Group A – Egypt’s Comeback Story
Egypt reclaimed their place on the global stage, finishing unbeaten with eight wins and two draws. Burkina Faso came close but missed out on the best runners-up slot despite a strong finish against Ethiopia.
Group B – Senegal Continues Its Golden Era
Senegal qualified for their third consecutive World Cup after narrowly edging DR Congo by two points. The Lions of Teranga’s consistent form reaffirms their dominance in African football, following back-to-back AFCON successes and previous World Cup appearances.
Group C – Drama in the Nigeria-South Africa-Benin Showdown
This group was filled with twists. South Africa emerged winners after Nigeria’s late surge and Benin Republic’s collapse on the final day. Despite missing the top spot, Nigeria’s superior goal difference earned them a playoff lifeline.
Group D – Cape Verde’s Fairytale Triumph
Cape Verde stunned the continent by topping a group that included Cameroon, the most decorated African World Cup participant. Their qualification marks a historic milestone for the island nation, while Cameroon will seek redemption via the playoff path.
Group E – Morocco’s Perfection Amid Eritrea’s Exit
Morocco continued their fine form from Qatar 2022, qualifying with a flawless record and two games to spare. Eritrea’s late withdrawal affected the group’s runner-up standings but didn’t halt Morocco’s momentum.
Group F – Ivory Coast Returns After Years in the Wilderness
The reigning African champions, Ivory Coast, confirmed qualification on the final day with the best defensive and attacking stats—25 goals scored, none conceded. Gabon finished as the top runners-up after a strong campaign.
Group G – Algeria Ends 12-Year Wait
After missing the last two tournaments, Algeria sealed their return with a dominant performance, confirming qualification with a game to spare.
Group H – Tunisia’s Smooth Ride
Tunisia booked their seventh World Cup appearance in style, collecting 28 points without conceding a goal. However, Equatorial Guinea’s disqualification for fielding ineligible player Emilio Nsue altered the group dynamics.
Group I – Ghana’s Consistency Continues
Ghana maintained their strong World Cup tradition, finishing top with 25 points and 23 goals. Their return adds another chapter to the Black Stars’ long-standing legacy on the world stage.
One More Ticket Up for Grabs
Morocco will host the playoff next month to decide Africa’s potential tenth representative. Gabon, DR Congo, Cameroon, and Nigeria will clash in a mini-tournament, with the winner advancing to the intercontinental playoff in Mexico come March 2026.
The stakes are high and as Africa’s footballing giants prepare for North America, the continent’s story at the 2026 World Cup promises to be one of pride, power, and passion.
