Republican President Dr Lazarus Chakwera yesterday urged for a unity of purpose for Malawi to retrace the social and economic foundations first Republican President Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda set.

Chakwera was speaking Friday at Kamuzu Mausoleum in Lilongwe during this year’s commemoration of Kamuzu Day.

Malawi commemorates the late President annually on May 14 which is his birthday.

Addressing Malawians at the Memorial Day, the eloquent Malawi leader who is also a pastor advised leaders to use power with restraint while they govern masses.

“Presidential power is a terrific servant but terrible master. We now have the power to use the presidential powers the way it was used to build Kamuzu Central Hospital and the way it was used to build points of entry such as Kamuzu International Airport.

“So long as I am President and God gives me breath, the powers of this office will only be used to serve you not to rule you. I am here to serve you and I will only work with those that want to serve you,” said President Chakwera.

Speaking on behalf of the Kamuzu family, Ken Kandodo Banda, expressed deep appreciation to former President Bingu wa Mutharika, for constructing the Kamuzu Mausoleum including the Kamuzu Banda Statue in the capital, Lilongwe.

Dr Kamuzu Banda who ruled Malawi for 30 consecutive years died on November 25, 1997, four years after the country decided to revert to political pluralism. He is greatly remembered laying a foundation social and economic development in addition to liberating his country from colonial rule.
