Obasanjo Calls NNPCL’s Invitation “An Insult to My Office” Amid Nigeria’s Political Tensions

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has voiced his anger over an invitation extended to him by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to tour the Port Harcourt Refinery. The invitation, following Obasanjo’s interview on Channels Television, was seen by the ex-president as an insult to his office.

Obasanjo had earlier criticized the refinery’s operational issues, citing concerns raised by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), which suggested inefficiencies due to corruption. In contrast, NNPCL responded by emphasizing their progress since the refinery’s rehabilitation and inviting Obasanjo to see the improvements firsthand. However, Obasanjo, through his spokesperson Kehinde Akinyemi, expressed disappointment, stating, “Is this how a former president should be invited?” He further stressed that the company had not made any official request as of January 2, 2024, calling the situation “a total disrespect.”

Obasanjo’s reaction underscores the complexities of Nigerian politics and the delicate nature of interactions between former leaders and the current government. While NNPCL’s intentions might have been to demonstrate transparency, the lack of formal communication and respect for protocol seems to have struck a nerve. This incident reflects broader issues of governance and how past leaders are treated, potentially influencing the public’s perception of the country’s political dynamics.
