Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has drawn sharp criticism after advising Black Americans, particularly Nigerians, against relocating to Nigeria due to the country’s struggling economy. During an appearance on The Big Homies House podcast, Davido stated, “It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles,” referring to Nigeria’s economic difficulties.
This remark sparked outrage, with some calling for an immediate retraction. Joe Igbokwe, an APC chieftain, expressed disappointment, urging Davido to take back his statement, emphasizing that Nigeria helped make the singer’s career. Bashir Ahmed, a former aide to President Buhari, also criticized the remark as unpatriotic, arguing that public figures should promote a positive image of their country.
While Davido’s concerns about Nigeria’s economy are valid, his choice of words may have been too harsh, especially as a public figure representing his country. It’s important to strike a balance between criticism and constructive dialogue.
