IOC Declines to Investigate Infantino Over Alleged Political Neutrality Breach
The International Olympic Committee has refused to pursue a complaint against FIFA President Gianni Infantino over allegations that he breached Olympic rules on political neutrality through his public association with United States President Donald Trump.
The complaint was filed by human rights organisation FairSquare, which accused Infantino of repeatedly demonstrating political support for Trump.
However, after reviewing the case, the IOC Ethics Commission concluded that it had no authority to investigate the matter.
An IOC spokesperson said the Olympic Charter guarantees international sports federations independence and autonomy in their governance.
As a result, the commission determined that the complaint fell outside its jurisdiction.
Infantino, who has been an IOC member since 2020, is required under the Olympic Charter to act independently of political and commercial interests.
His relationship with Trump has attracted attention in recent months, particularly after he attended a meeting of Trump’s Board of Peace wearing a cap bearing the inscription “USA” and “45-47”, a reference to Trump’s two presidential terms.
The IOC had earlier said it was in contact with FIFA over the matter and acknowledged the football governing body’s support for sports recovery initiatives in Gaza, including plans involving sporting infrastructure, education and elite development.
FIFA also awarded Trump its inaugural peace prize in December, with Infantino praising the US president’s efforts to promote peace and unity.
The close relationship between the two men has continued to draw attention, with Trump previously saying he would contact Infantino before FIFA lifted a suspension imposed on US striker Folarin Balogun following a red card.
