Nigeria is leading the 2025 African Weightlifting Senior Championship in Mauritius, with 7 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze medal as the event nears its end.
Rafiatu Lawal (59kg) and Didih Onome (55kg) were standout performers, each winning three gold medals.
Lawal, who won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, said, “I came prepared, and I knew I had to give it everything. The support from the Federation and the National Sports Commission has been incredible, it gave us the edge. This gold is for Nigeria.”
Onome shared her determination, saying, “We came to Mauritius on a mission to show the strength of Nigerian weightlifting. Every lift is for the green and white. I dedicate these medals to Dr. Ibrahim Abdul and the NSC, whose leadership continues to inspire us.”
Edidiong Joseph secured one gold and two silver medals in the 73kg category, while Tuesday Emmanuel earned two silver and one bronze. Omolola Matthew and Sarah Ovayioza are still competing in their categories.
Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, motivated the team with incentives for each medal won.
Additionally, four lifters were upgraded to Category A of the Elite Athletes Programme, receiving a $20,000 training grant.
The competition continues until April 28, with Team Nigeria aiming for more victories.
