In a dramatic move, Guinea-Bissau has expelled journalists from two prominent Portuguese news organizations, Lusa and RTP. The government has ordered their departure by Tuesday, citing a suspension of their operations within the country, though no specific reasons for the action have been disclosed.
The expulsion coincides with President Umaro Sissoco Embaló’s scheduled visit to Lisbon, where he was due to participate in a key ceremony marking his role as the rotating president of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP). Embaló, however, will now not attend the event.
This move stirs memories of Guinea-Bissau’s 1974 independence from Portugal, and the Portuguese government has quickly condemned the decision, calling it “unjustifiable” and “highly reprehensible.”
In response, Guinea-Bissau’s Foreign Minister Carlos Pinto Pereira confirmed the decision was made by the government, with a formal explanation expected soon. The unfolding situation signals escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
