US Revokes 175,000+ Visas as Trump Intensifies Immigration Screening

More than 175,000 visas issued to foreign nationals have been revoked by the United States as the Donald Trump administration steps up its scrutiny of visa holders.

The U.S. Department of State announced the cancellations on Monday, attributing them to violations of visa conditions, criminal offences, immigration-related abuses and conduct considered harmful to public safety or national security.

The department said most of the revocations followed encounters between visa holders and law enforcement agencies.

Among the leading grounds were criminal activity, assault, driving under the influence, theft and drug-related offences.

Some cancellations, according to the State Department, involved foreign nationals accused or convicted of more serious offences, including child abuse, sexual assault, fraud, embezzlement and other forms of criminal misconduct.

The department said the visa cancellations were part of its continuing vetting process aimed at identifying individuals who no longer meet the requirements for entry or continued travel to the United States.

In a fact sheet released alongside the announcement, the department listed several cases involving foreign nationals who had faced serious criminal charges.

The cases included individuals accused of offences involving sexual violence, domestic violence, kidnapping, human trafficking and exploitation of minors. Other cases involved allegations relating to child sexual abuse material.

The department also cited the case of a foreign national working with young students who was arrested over an alleged sexual assault.

Drug and driving offences featured among the cases highlighted, including an individual arrested while allegedly possessing heroin and driving under the influence.

Another foreign national was accused of involvement in a Medicaid fraud scheme involving more than $5 million in allegedly fraudulent claims.

The administration also said it had taken action against multiple foreign nationals over what it described as celebrations of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The State Department maintained that its visa system requires continued compliance with U.S. law and immigration rules, stressing that visa holders can lose their status when they violate those requirements.

The latest action represents another significant step in the Trump administration’s immigration policy, with the government signalling that foreign nationals in the United States will remain subject to continuing scrutiny after their visas are issued.
