Mozambican and Rwandan forces are reported to have encircled Islamic Al-Shabaab militants in the country’s northern Cabo Delgado province ahead of a “last major military push”.
According to local media reports, the two countries’ troops are closing in on insurgents Siri I and Siri II areas.
The joint military operation comes four days after Mozambican forces working with their Rwandan counterparts repossessed Mbau region, a once key stronghold for jihadist fighters.
Mbau was seized after a heavy fire exchange which saw over 100 people released from Insurgency captivity, leaving dozens of soldiers killed and injured.
The ongoing joint counter-insurgency operations are making significant gains with government taking control of key areas which were once home grounds for militias.
