Popular Mortal Kombat Star Shang Tsung Tagawa Dies at 75
Legendary actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, known worldwide for playing Shang Tsung in the Mortal Kombat franchise, has died at the age of 75.

His family confirmed he passed away in Santa Barbara after complications from a stroke, surrounded by his children.
Tagawa had a long and memorable career, appearing in over 150 films, TV shows, and video games, and was admired for his powerful screen presence and deep connection to martial arts.
Tagawa’s big break came with The Last Emperor in 1987, which opened the doors to major Hollywood roles in films like Pearl Harbor, Rising Sun, 47 Ronin, and Memoirs of a Geisha.

However, his most iconic character remained Shang Tsung, a role he played across movies, TV series, and video games for nearly three decades.
He also appeared in popular shows such as MacGyver, Miami Vice, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and later took on a major role as Tagomi in Amazon’s hit series The Man in the High Castle.
Beyond acting, Tagawa was a lifelong martial artist who trained in Kendo and Karate, eventually creating his own discipline called Chun-Shin.

He lived in Hawaii with his family and was respected for his calm spirit and cultural depth.
Tagawa is survived by his children Calen, Brynne, and Cana, as well as two grandchildren.

His unforgettable roles and contributions to both film and martial arts have left a lasting legacy.
