Nollywood Celebrates as Legendary Actor Olu Jacobs Clocks 85
Nigeria’s film industry is celebrating one of its greatest icons as veteran actor and film executive Olu Jacobs marks his 85th birthday today, July 11.

Born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs on July 11, 1942, the celebrated actor has enjoyed a remarkable career spanning more than five decades. He is widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest actors, with an impressive body of work that includes Nollywood classics, British television productions, and international films.

Affectionately known as “Uncle Olu,” Jacobs has become a symbol of excellence in African cinema. Alongside legends such as Pete Edochie, Justus Esiri, Enebeli Elebuwa, and the late Sam Loco Efe, he is recognised as one of the most influential actors in the history of African filmmaking.

His passion for acting began after watching the annual performances of legendary theatre pioneer Hubert Ogunde in Kano. Inspired by the experience, Jacobs travelled to England, where he studied at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London before launching a successful international acting career.

Over the years, his exceptional performances and commanding screen presence have earned him widespread admiration, with many describing him as one of Nollywood’s greatest role interpreters.

His outstanding contribution to the film industry has been recognised with several prestigious awards, including the African Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007, the Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), and the AMAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Beyond acting, Olu Jacobs and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, have continued to shape the future of Nigerian entertainment through the Lufodo Group, a media company involved in film production, distribution, and the training of young talents through the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.

As he celebrates his 85th birthday, tributes continue to pour in from fans, colleagues, and admirers across the world, honouring a man whose talent, dedication, and legacy have helped define Nollywood and inspired generations of actors.
