Nigeria: Obi Slams Tinubu Over Maiduguri Blasts, Rising Insecurity

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised the administration of Bola Tinubu over the recent explosions in Maiduguri, describing the incident as a stark reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

In a statement posted on his verified X account on Tuesday, Obi condemned the attacks, which reportedly claimed several lives and left more than a hundred people injured.

He said the development highlights what he considers a failure of government to uphold its fundamental responsibility of protecting citizens.

Obi warned that insecurity is becoming increasingly normalised across the country, noting that repeated violent incidents are no longer provoking the level of urgency they deserve.

He described the trend as troubling and indicative of a broader breakdown in governance.

He linked the Maiduguri explosions to ongoing security challenges in several parts of the country, including Kwara, Nasarawa, Kogi, Plateau, Sokoto, and Benue states, as well as areas within the Federal Capital Territory.

He also raised concerns about reports from Katsina State, where some communities are allegedly being forced to pay levies—often referred to as “peace taxes”—to armed groups to avoid attacks.

According to Obi, the situation demands urgent and decisive leadership, stressing that crises of this nature test both the nation’s security framework and the commitment of those in power.

He called on authorities to engage directly with affected communities and implement concrete measures to prevent further attacks.

He extended condolences to families of the victims and wished those injured a quick recovery.

Obi concluded by urging a renewed national effort to confront insecurity, insisting that Nigeria must act swiftly and responsibly to safeguard its people.
