Rainstorm Displaces Residents, Damages Over 80 Buildings in Enugu, Nigeria

Hundreds of residents in Ukete Oduma community, located in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria, have been left without shelter after a severe rainstorm caused widespread destruction.

The storm affected no fewer than 80 buildings, including homes, schools, and churches.

Residents also reported significant losses, with property worth millions of naira destroyed, alongside electricity poles, economic trees, and livestock.

When visited, the community was in disarray, with many residents attempting to recover belongings soaked by rain.

Several families have been forced out of their homes, as damaged roofs and collapsed structures left them exposed to the elements.

The traditional ruler of the community, Patrick Oshiekwe, described the incident as the worst he has witnessed in his lifetime, noting that many residents now have nowhere to stay.

He appealed to the Enugu State government and other stakeholders for urgent assistance, adding that his palace is currently being used to shelter displaced families.

He specifically called on Peter Ndubisi Mbah and other leaders to intervene, as continued rainfall is worsening conditions in the community.

Also speaking, the President General of the community, Jeremia Njoku, expressed concern over the scale of the damage.

While noting that no lives were lost, he said the destruction was extensive and beyond what residents could handle without support.

Some affected residents, including Ernest Nweze and Ifeanyichukwu Akuatuegwu, said they had lost properties accumulated over many years and are now seeking help to rebuild.

As of the time of filing this report, government officials and emergency agencies were yet to visit the affected area.
