Hungary’s Incoming Leader Warns: Netanyahu Risks Arrest on Arrival

Hungary’s Prime Minister-elect, Peter Magyar, has sent a strong signal to Israel, declaring that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be arrested if he steps into Hungarian territory while still wanted by the International Criminal Court.

Speaking to reporters, Magyar stressed that Hungary would be bound by its obligations as a member of the court.

According to him, any individual under an ICC arrest warrant who enters the country must be taken into custody — a position that marks a clear shift in tone from the previous administration.

The ICC had issued a warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, accusing him of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Despite this, Hungary did not act when the Israeli leader visited Budapest in April 2025, drawing criticism and raising questions about the country’s commitment to international law.

Magyar, however, appears determined to chart a different course. He revealed plans to halt Hungary’s earlier move to withdraw from the ICC, signaling a renewed willingness to cooperate with the court and uphold its legal framework.

His stance follows a major political transition at home. Longtime leader Viktor Orbán lost power after 16 years in office, with Magyar’s centre-right Tisza Party securing a sweeping electoral victory on April 12.

With this new direction, Hungary may be repositioning itself on the global stage — and for Netanyahu, any future visit could now carry far more serious consequences than before.
