Amaechi Urges Nigerian Government to Halt Campaign Activities, Tackle Rising Insecurity

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has asked the Federal Government to temporarily suspend political campaigns and concentrate fully on addressing Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

Amaechi made the appeal on Monday while reacting to the escalating wave of killings, kidnappings, and violent attacks reported across several parts of the country.

He argued that national security must take precedence over political activities, especially as the country prepares for another election cycle.

According to the former Rivers State governor, conducting campaigns while many Nigerians live in fear sends the wrong message and undermines public confidence in the government.

“There can be no meaningful elections if citizens do not feel safe in their own communities,” Amaechi said.

He stressed that protecting lives and property remains the government’s foremost responsibility, warning that continued electioneering amid widespread insecurity could further heighten citizens’ frustration and distrust.

Nigeria has continued to grapple with multiple security challenges, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, farmer-herder clashes in the Middle Belt, and rising cases of kidnapping for ransom in several states.

Amaechi’s comments add to growing calls from political leaders and civil society groups urging the government to intensify efforts to restore peace and stability before the country becomes fully immersed in election activities.
